THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING OPENS ITS DOORS

Visit the political centre of Switzerland and embark on a journey of discovery through a parliament building charged with symbols that represent the history and diversity of our country and its people. The President of the National Council, Dominique de Buman, and the President of the Council of States, Karin Keller-Sutter, will be present in the National Council chamber between 10 h and 11 h to answer your questions. The celebrations will be rounded off with music performances.

DELICIOUS FOOD ACCOMPANIED BY UPLIFTING MUSIC

The smell of freshly-brewed coffee, grilled bacon, a buffet with cheese, milk, muesli and bread – everything you could wish for. You can expect a combination of passionate and rousing music full of heart and soul from Paul Stucki’s Musig Stubete. The show on Münsterplatz will be recorded and broadcasted on Schweiz 5 at 20 h on August 25 and September 1.

GO UP HIGH FOR THE AUGUST 1ST FIREWORK DISPLAY

For a very special view of the August 1st firework display, make your way up to the Gurten. In the Restaurant Gurtners (11.30 h – 14 h and 18 h – 23.30 h), you can enjoy a 4-course gala dinner with stunning views of the city. The Tapis Rouge self-service restaurant will be serving a lavish brunch from 9 h to 14 h, and a traditional August 1st buffet from 18 h. The Gurten Pavillon will treat you to a culinary feast including bratwurst, fine beer and a very special view of Switzerland`s capital from 17 h! The toboggan run will be open from 10 h to 18 h if the weather conditions are dry.

Kleine Schanze: brunch, barbecue, party • 10 – 22 h

PICNIC & PARTY IN THE PARK

The Kleine Schanze Park Café will be offering brunch and further delicacies from 10 h to 15 h to start the day. An impressive 100-metre-long charcoal grill supplied by Ragaz Catering beckons you to enjoy a leisurely barbecue. From 10 h to 22 h you’ll be able to barbecue whenever and for as long as you wish on the longest grill in Switzerland. Simply fill your picnic basket with all your food, plates and cutlery, pack some blankets and you’re good to go. Chilled beverages for young and old are available at the bars. From 16 h, a party with fabulous music and a unique backdrop will kick off on Bern’s most beautiful garden terrace.

THE MEETING PLACE IN THE HEART OF BERN

The Burgher’s Hospital brings together the «Berner Generationen-Haus», the «Burgerspittel am Bahnhofplatz», an old people’s home and the administration of the Berne Civic Community under one roof. Pay us a visit and inspect the unique, historic boardroom which, after a gap of nearly 120 years, has now been reinstated in its original location on the first floor.

THE HISTORICAL BUILDING OPENS ITS DOORS

Visit the most outstanding building in Bern’s Old Town. The Erlacherhof was built according to the late baroque layout, on the principle of a town palace with a courtyard in front and a garden behind. Today the palace is the venue for the weekly meetings of the Municipal Council of the City of Bern (Executive), and the headquarters for the Mayor, the Mayor’s Office and the Chancellery.

LANTERN-MAKING, PAINTING WORKSHOP AND LOTS MORE

On August 1 the Münsterplattform is transformed into a children’s playground. They learn to make lanterns for the evening procession through the Old Town, have their faces painted, and get to race around the platform terrace in toy cars.

THE TOURING SHOW WILL ENCHANT YOUNG AND OLD

A SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR DISABLED PEOPLE

Procap, Switzerland’s largest self-help organisation for the disabled, will be converting the Bundesplatz into a sea of lights. With your help the Bundesplatz will be set ablaze with the glow of thousands of lights. The coloured holders and night-lights are available for 5 francs. The proceeds from the sale of lights will help to fund Procap’s activities for disabled people in the canton of Bern.

Regula Bühlmann, president of the city council, will begin the official celebration with a speech linked to the Swiss National Day. Watch the group «Kids West» show off their sing, rap and dance talents and enjoy the performance of the saxophone quartet «Lily Horn Is Born». The procession starts at the Münsterplatz at 21.15 h and goes along Gerechtigkeitsgasse, Kramgasse, Hotelgasse and Münstergasse to finish on Münsterplatz at 21.45 h. All children taking part in the procession will get a free ice-cream at the end.
