Outdoor pools and Lidos along the Aare

In summer, several municipalities along the Aare River operate enticing outdoor pools and lidos with direct access to the river; some also have cordoned-off bathing facilities filled with Aare river water for a refreshing dip. So between Thun and Bern, there’s lots of fun bathing to be had during the hot summer weather. And, this summer, the «Aare You Safe?» campaign is to be prominently showcased once again, drawing Aare enthusiasts’ attention to the proper rules of conduct in, on, and by the Aare River.

City of Bern pools & lidos

Freibad Marzili Lido

This is arguably the City of Bern’s most famous lido with its views of the Federal Palace, and each year it attracts thousands of swimmers and sunbathers. With its direct access to the Aare the Marzili offers lots of opportunities to exit the Aare after a relaxing swim in the river. Besides the general dos and don’ts it’s important to take note of the signposts for exiting river so you are out of the water well before the Dalmazi Bridge. Swimmers can also do their laps in the 50 m pool, with a separate kiddies’ paddling pool providing lots of water fun for toddlers.

Freibad Lorraine Lido

The Lorraine Lido is located right on the Aare River, ideal for a refreshing swim in the Aare. Thanks to a man-made breakwater protecting swimmers against the free-flowing Aare, the waters here are almost still, making this the perfect spot for a relaxed summer afternoon. But even here, the watchword is still: be careful when swimming in the Aare. Other facilities for families include a kiddies’ paddling pool and a children’s playground.

Eichholz Campsite

The Eichholz Campsite is situated in an idyllic location right on the banks of the Aare. The adjoining sunbathing meadow is ideal for unwinding and clearing the mind of the hectic pace of everyday life. Proficient swimmers also have the opportunity to swim down the Aare from the Eichholz to the Marzili. But bathers are always advised to take a look at the SLRG hazard map before setting off.

Flussbad Schwäbis Thun Lido

The Flussbad Schwäbis in Thun is a small, picturesque lido. It has provided a relaxed family atmosphere in a vintage setting since 1884. A seat at a restaurant table right next to the Aare River is guaranteed to conjure up that holiday mood. The river lido offers swimmers the opportunity to take a dip in the Aare over a short, calm section of the river. But as it is a natural water course, there’s no influencing the water temperature. So please observe the lido bathing rules at all times.

Aarebad Muri b. Bern Lido

The Municipality of Muri b. Bern boasts a delightful lido located right on the outskirts of the city of Bern, open from May to September. As a special attraction alongside its pools, the Aare Lido also provides the opportunity for a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the Aare River. But here, too, your attention is drawn to the following warning: «Caution: for good swimmers only; give the Aare River all the respect it deserves.»

Parkbad Münsingen Lido

Nestling in the beautiful wetlands landscape of the Aare River, the Parkbad Lido in Münsingen is an extremely attractive place of rest and relaxation, one much appreciated by outside guests and visitors, too. Each season runs from early May to mid-September. And year after year, the Lido has undergone a schedule of renovation, expansion and refurbishment. Throughout the season the local bus route operates a half-hourly service to the Lido. And each year the Parkbad attracts around 150,000 guests.
